We can provide a referral for a no-cost ultrasound. Take one of our pregnancy tests. If positive, confirm the viability of your pregnancy with an ultrasound.
Why You Need An Ultrasound
A positive pregnancy test result should be all you need to decide about your unplanned pregnancy. But it isn’t. You need an ultrasound to give you more information. Take a closer look at what you’ll learn and why you need it.
Is Your Pregnancy Viable?
The Mayo Clinic reports up to 20% of known pregnancies will end in a natural miscarriage. The actual number may be higher because a significant number of miscarriages happen before a woman realizes she’s pregnant.
An ultrasound tells you if you’ve miscarried or if your pregnancy is growing and has a detectable heartbeat (viable). It’s possible to get a positive result on a pregnancy test if you miscarry because it takes your body days or even weeks to realize it’s no longer pregnant.
How Long Have You Been Pregnant?
The date you got pregnant doesn’t seem important until you consider abortion. The gestational age (number of days or weeks you’ve been pregnant) determines the abortion method used.
You qualify for medical abortion (the abortion pill method) if your pregnancy is 70 days or less. Some doctors will perform a medical abortion after 70 days, but that’s not within FDA guidelines. Are you sure you know when you got pregnant? If not, you need an ultrasound.
Where Is Your Pregnancy Located?
Not all pregnancies grow in the proper location. Some pregnancies, known as ectopic pregnancy, form outside of the uterus. Often these form in the fallopian tubes that lead to the uterus.
Ectopic pregnancies are dangerous. If they grow too large, your fallopian tube could rupture. Only an ultrasound can confirm the location of your pregnancy.
