That fast, everything in your life changed. Your partner just announced she’s missed a period and thinks she’s pregnant. What happens next may be her decision, but most women care what their guy thinks.
Steps You Should Take
Here are a few steps to making the best choice for both of you – together.
Make sure she’s pregnant
Offer to go with her or help her schedule an appointment at the Pregnancy Care Center. We offer several free pregnancy services, including free and confidential pregnancy testing.
Learn About Your Options
Learn about your options. Your partner is carrying the baby, but suddenly you are both parents. What does that mean for you and her?
Listen To Her
Ask her about her thoughts and feelings. Make sure you listen to her answers. What excites her? What makes her fearful?
Get Counseling
Consider talking with others who are close to you. We’re here to listen and offer advice to make your relationship better than ever.
Steps You Shouldn’t Take
No matter what, avoid making these mistakes:
-
- Don’t shut down.
She needs to hear what you’re thinking. Are you excited? Fearful? Angry? - Don’t tell her the decision is up to her.
No one should put that decision on someone else. After all, your partner wasn’t the only one to get pregnant. Make the decision together as two mature adults should. - Don’t Pressure Her
You should have an opinion, but don’t pressure her. Commit to exploring your options together. - Don’t Act Like It’s No Big Deal
An unplanned pregnancy is a big deal. Let your partner know she’s important to you. Even if you two aren’t together now or never planned to be together long term, let her know you want to work this out with her.
- Don’t shut down.
